Why a small navy may need specialised destroyers

A general-purpose destroyer is attractive on paper, but a small fleet may lose it to other assignments and leave its carrier group without enough dedicated air defence.

Notes

Different navies derive value from the same platform in different ways. For a Royal Navy with only six destroyers, a highly flexible ship would be attractive to commanders outside the carrier task group. Detaching one from a planned pair could leave the group with only a single air-defence destroyer. Specialisation can therefore protect force availability by making the ship's intended task-group role harder to dilute, a concern that also applies to demands on Type 26 frigates.
