Stuart McLean's Paddy's Men is recommended for its history of the Special Raiding Squadron. Large maps clarify the unit's movements through the Adriatic and the Italian campaign, while photographs give faces to the operations. Many of those shown had not been career soldiers before the war and appear strikingly young. The images convey the weight of the decisions these wartime recruits had to make.
