Why special forces cannot replace line units

Elite units excel at narrow high-risk missions but lack the mass to patrol, hold ground, or perform a battalion's routine tasks.

Notes

SAS and SBS missions differ from the work expected of conventional formations. Small specialist teams plan and execute high-risk, high-payoff objectives, but lack the numbers required for persistent patrols and holding ground. Assigning them those tasks wastes their specialist role and leaves the larger force's manpower needs unmet. A later example of Ranger units in Italy illustrates the danger of overusing elite infantry when ordinary line strength is insufficient.
