A distant ship needs trades as well as specialists

Long-duration spacecraft need technicians, fabrication expertise, and enough training depth to repair failures far beyond immediate outside help.

Notes

Aircraft-style crew plans built only around pilots and mission specialists leave important repair work uncovered. Academic engineering knowledge differs from the practical skill of technicians who keep machines working and manufacture replacement parts. Even advanced 3D printing requires trained operators and a functioning production system, while gathering raw material from asteroids adds another specialist task. Cross-training the flight crew is possible, but it lengthens preparation and may still leave them without the thousands of hours of experience needed during a serious failure. A Mars crew therefore needs more people or a much deeper training commitment than a short flight mission.
