Why the Soviet Union Might Intervene at Suez

Moscow could imagine gaining influence in the Middle East, weakening NATO, and threatening Europe's fuel supply through a limited intervention.

Notes

A limited intervention promised the Soviet Union several rewards. Moscow could exploit a divided alliance, appear to defend Egypt, and damage the two NATO powers with the deepest regional networks. Weakening Britain and France could remove important conventional forces from a future European war while expanding Soviet standing in the Middle East. Greater influence over regional oil producers would also give Moscow leverage over Europe's fuel supply. The gamble only worked if intervention remained below the threshold of full American entry and general war.
