Sovereign capability and supply-chain risk

Equipment with one national brand can depend on components and spare parts from several countries, complicating independent support.

Notes

Multinational warship systems can create dependence as well as scale. Equipment sold under one national label may contain Italian, American, Swedish, British, or other components. Political and trade disputes can therefore affect spare parts and a navy's ability to maintain or use a system independently. Economies of scale still make multinational supply chains unavoidable because only a few firms may produce a specialized component. Cooperation can lower costs while the partners preserve key sovereign capabilities where practical.
