The game initially gives the American opponent a 12.2-inch, 53-calibre main battery, an implausible choice for a 1905-06 comparison. South Carolina- and Delaware-era practice provides the basis for resetting the main guns to 12-inch, 45-calibre weapons. The six-inch secondary range is also brought into line with the British design so mismatched game settings do not drive the result. The resulting ship takes some details from Delaware but is closer in overall form to South Carolina. A historical simulation needs this kind of calibration before its battle results can illuminate real design tradeoffs.

Calibrating a game dreadnought against South Carolina and Delaware
The American opponent is rebuilt around period 12-inch and six-inch weapons so an ahistorical game default does not decide the comparison.
