The Soldati class began before the Second World War at roughly 1,850 to 1,880 tons standard, directly comparable in size to the Tribal class. It retained four 4.7-inch guns in two twin mounts and six 21-inch torpedoes in two triple launchers. A 48-mine capacity and speeds of 34 to 35 knots added useful capabilities without increasing the main gun battery. The newer 1936-37 pattern guns reached about 19 kilometres, but reduced elevation limited their use against aircraft. Some books report rifling-related accuracy problems, while others do not. A slower rate of fire is also cited, qualifying the description of these weapons as an improvement.
