Software updates can disrupt integrated ship systems

Navigation, weapons, and data networks depend on interfaces that can fail after an otherwise ordinary software update.

Notes

Trials cannot eliminate every error in installation or operation, and later upgrades can introduce fresh faults. A routine software update can disrupt an interface even when neither the update nor the affected application is malicious. On a warship, the consequences include whether navigation computers, missile systems, and other equipment can still exchange data correctly. Modern ships combine extensive computing and data storage with propulsion, electrical power, accommodation, and weapons. Testing must establish how these systems work together after changes.
