Sankt Georg was the strongest armoured cruiser fielded by the Triple Alliance in the Mediterranean. The ship displaced about 8,200 tons at full load, reached twenty-two knots, and carried a belt and turrets protected by roughly eight inches of armour. Its armament, however, ranged from 9.4-inch and 7.5-inch guns through several 5.9-inch, 2.8-inch, 2.6-inch, 1.9-inch, and 1.5-inch weapons, as well as torpedoes and landing guns. That variety imposed a severe ammunition, spare-parts, and training burden. The specifications make Sankt Georg a useful case study in how a respectable hull could be undermined by an incoherent battery.
