In the campaign, Sheffield separates from two older heavy cruisers while they engage a battleship. The light cruiser's destroyer-like maneuverability lets it split the opposing force, launch torpedoes, and survive return attacks. Once smoke is laid, repeated course changes keep opponents from following a predictable smoke pool. The maneuver draws them toward the heavy cruisers after they have expended many torpedoes, combining concealment and diversion with support from the heavier ships.
