Why did twin and triple mountings take so long to appear for smaller naval guns?
Short answerMiniaturizing the loading, training, and supporting machinery was difficult.
NotesA smaller shell does not make every part of a powered multiple mounting proportionally easy to shrink. Designers still have to fit ammunition handling, recoil, training, and crew arrangements into a much tighter space. That packaging problem delayed practical twin and triple installations.
