Why plumbing and electrical work resist full automation

Skilled trades illustrate why automating part of a task does not remove the need for people who can interpret an unfamiliar setting and carry out the work.

Notes

Plumbing, electrical work and building are offered as examples of skilled careers that school discussions can neglect when they focus on university professions. These jobs can pay well without requiring that route into employment. Automating them fully is difficult because practical work requires interpreting a large amount of sensory information in changing settings. Individual elements can be automated while laying cables, installing pipes or building walls still requires qualified people. The distinction is between mechanising parts of a job and replacing the person responsible for the work.
