Why is putting six-inch guns on destroyers a bad idea?
Short answerThe shells, hoists, mounts, handling crews, and reload times make them difficult to use effectively within a treaty destroyer's weight allowance.
NotesA treaty-era destroyer has too little displacement to accommodate a satisfactory six-inch gun system easily. The burden includes the shell, mounting, hoist, and the equipment needed to aim the gun. Reloading and the extra people needed to handle heavy ammunition add further costs. That caliber also exceeds what a destroyer's work is considered to require. A treaty limit around 5.1 inches is recalled tentatively in connection with French 130 mm weapons.
