What the simulated fleet action shows

The recorded American-Japanese encounter remains undecided, illustrating design tradeoffs while leaving its eventual outcome unobserved.

Notes

The recorded simulation does not show a decisive victory before it is saved and stopped. The American ships withstand their larger Japanese opponents, while superior American numbers and gunfire fail to overwhelm the faster force. Both squadrons remain sufficiently concentrated to preserve their firepower and avoid being divided. Severe damage, ammunition exhaustion and an inconclusive return are the expected ending, rather than a completed result shown in the recording. Cruisers and destroyers are identified as possible deciding forces in a fuller fleet action. The first of four runs was selected for the video.
