Chapter · 2:44:15-2:48:10

Sidney Smith's precocious command and intelligence apprenticeship

Smith's promotion before sixteen and peacetime study of foreign ports show how early command, patronage, and self-directed intelligence shaped an exceptional frigate officer.

Notes

Sidney Smith fought in the American Revolutionary War and became a lieutenant on a third-rate ship before his sixteenth birthday. He commanded a sloop at sixteen and reached post-captain rank while still a teenager. Peace put him ashore on half pay, but he used the interval to inspect Cherbourg and travel through France, Spain, and Morocco. The young officer turned precocious promotion into practical knowledge of potential enemies rather than waiting passively for another command.
