Sidney Smith's anti-slavery campaign and Paris exile

After the Napoleonic Wars, Smith campaigned against African and Barbary enslavement but ended his career burdened by unreimbursed diplomatic debts.

Notes

Peace redirected Smith's energy toward ending slave-taking by both African systems and the Barbary states. He attended the Congress of Vienna to seek money and military action for the cause. The British government was slow to repay expenses from his diplomatic work, forcing his family to live in Paris to avoid debt imprisonment until reimbursement arrived. He received no further command and died there in 1840, closing a career that repeatedly crossed naval, military, intelligence, and political boundaries.
