Shock trials test survivability just short of destruction

A nearby explosive shock is applied only after normal systems are proven, allowing engineers to distinguish expected damage from unacceptable failures.

Notes

Shock trials deliberately impose a severe underwater blast near a working ship without turning the event into a sinking exercise. Establishing a complete systems baseline first lets engineers identify what the blast actually broke, repair ordinary damage, and redesign components that failed unexpectedly. Later ships may still need renewed testing because construction details, software, or nominally identical sensors can change between hulls.
