Shipyard capacity turned plans into late ships

Russian capital-ship programs reveal how slow construction and limited industrial capacity could leave new ships generations behind foreign contemporaries.

Notes

Lengthy Russian construction and commissioning timelines lagged behind the rapid advance of British dreadnought design. One ship launched in 1906 and commissioned in 1911 entered service as Britain moved from Neptune toward the Orion class. The Gangut class then reached service in 1914-15 at roughly the same time as the Queen Elizabeth class. Population alone did not translate into naval strength when yards, machinery, testing, and finance could not deliver ships at the required pace.
