Chapter · 20:33-24:46

USS Shark and Anglo-American anti-piracy

Possible shipyard duty with USS Shark and service in the Mosquito Fleet exposed Farragut to warship construction and close Anglo-American cooperation against Caribbean piracy.

Notes

Farragut may have observed USS Shark's construction at Washington Navy Yard before joining her first crew, adding shipbuilding knowledge to his seagoing education. He then moved into the shallow-draft schooner force used against piracy around Cuba and the Caribbean. Royal Navy and US Navy vessels worked in tandem, repeatedly constraining the routes pirates could use to evade one service or the other. The cooperation is especially striking because many officers on both sides still had personal service memories of the War of 1812.
