Shipboard workshops and the possibility of earlier radar

Shipboard machinists could modify equipment at sea, while continued long-range gunnery development might create stronger demand for radar.

Notes

Cruisers and larger warships carried machinists and workshop equipment, including lathes, to make components needed to keep the ship running. Skilled personnel working close to that machinery could also adapt equipment in service. This combination offered a practical setting for rapid technical development. Continued capital-ship construction might increase demand for accurate long-range gunnery measurements and encourage earlier radar rangefinding. Radar could supplement optical rangefinders and observation of shell splashes, but its earlier arrival remains a proposed consequence whose timing cannot be known.
