Designing a history course beyond one research interest

Comparative course design can give students room to form interpretations beyond a lecturer's preferred subject and conclusions.

Notes

A course built entirely around its lecturer's research can encourage students to reproduce that lecturer's conclusions. Some academics avoid this problem successfully, so it is a risk rather than an inevitable result. One proposed safeguard is to teach naval diplomacy in the 1920s and 1930s through several countries, including South American examples. British naval diplomacy would remain part of the course, with a limited place among coursework and examination options. A separate proposal divides Second World War combatants into cruisers and larger ships, and destroyers and smaller vessels, with attention to their roles and procurement.
