The Sherman beyond the death-trap myth

The Sherman is assessed through crew survival, repairability, production, and battlefield force packages rather than a one-on-one specification table.

Notes

The Sherman's death-trap reputation is challenged through crew survivability and the ease of repairing damaged tanks. A Panther's apparent superiority over one Sherman on a specification table does not establish that it can defeat two or three Shermans together. Numbers matter when a force can put several capable vehicles into the same fight, rather than compensating for equipment that is useless. Graf Spee and the three British cruisers at the River Plate provide the naval comparison: the strength of the opposing force matters more than the result of an imagined duel between individual ships.
