Sfax's refits and the speed of naval obsolescence

Use Sfax's 1897-1898 refit and 1905-1910 retirement to see how quickly Tsushima, HMS Dreadnought, and the Invincible class changed the value of an older cruiser.

Notes

Sfax received a major refit soon after entering service and another in 1897-1898 because the French Navy still regarded her as useful. She was decommissioned on 13 August 1905, struck in 1906, and scrapped in 1910. Across that short interval, the Battle of Tsushima, HMS Dreadnought, and the Invincible class changed naval expectations quickly. The refit made sense when it was authorized, yet her remaining service life collapsed as new combat evidence and ship types appeared. Her career shows why a navy can invest heavily in a useful hull shortly before its military value falls away.
