Sfax's legacy in French protected-cruiser design

See how later cruisers such as Tage developed the Sfax pattern and why contemporary cruiser labels differed from later historical categories.

Notes

Later French cruisers, including Tage, reworked the Sfax pattern with altered funnels, rigs, and arrangements. These ships remained simply cruisers to their contemporaries, so later labels such as pre-dreadnought can mislead when projected backward. Navies used their own systems of armored and protected cruisers. Some divided protected cruisers into first, second, and even third classes, while others experimented with labels such as sloop. Sfax made part of the Jeune École program look practical enough to repeat, and that repeatable pattern explains her legacy in French cruiser design.
