Seydlitz returned from Jutland with so little buoyancy remaining that a large wave could have prevented her from reaching harbour. Her crew removed weight and kept the pumps running until the badly damaged battlecruiser was alongside. Once the pumps stopped, she settled immediately. Getting her home preserved a ship that Germany could eventually repair, although she could contribute nothing while that work continued.

Seydlitz returned from Jutland only because her crew stripped away weight and kept the badly damaged battlecruiser afloat until she reached harbor.
