Chapter · 4:57-7:43

How four navies built their 74-gun fleets

British, French, Russian, and Venetian construction patterns show that the 74 was a family of fleet solutions rather than one uniform design.

Notes

Britain, France, Russia, and Venice reached the 74 by different routes. The Royal Navy developed the type through many successive classes, while France placed much of its rebuilding program in the large Temeraire class. Russia built many 74s across numerous classes, and Venice retained its own groups despite declining strategic power. The rating covered national design traditions, captured or rebuilt ships, and vessels whose real armament did not always match their nominal gun count.
