Sissoi Veliky was conceived as a Baltic Fleet battleship in the 1890s yet was lost in the Pacific at Tsushima. Her four 12-inch guns and extensive mixed battery made her a credible workhorse in the context for which she was designed. Russian efforts to add weapons and armour repeatedly overloaded the ship without providing new displacement or machinery to carry the weight. The original specification was reasonable, while later employment and modification eroded the ship's structural and operational integrity.

Sissoi Veliky, overload, and Tsushima
Sissoi Veliky's fate at Tsushima shows the limits of judging a 1890s design outside its original strategic and technical context.
