Would a properly radar-equipped M247 Sergeant York still serve today as a mass-produced anti-drone system?
Short answerProbably not in regular service, though stored vehicles could be useful emergency counter-drone assets for critical sites or wartime aid.
NotesThe M247 would probably not remain in normal service even with a sound radar because its capabilities exceed many counter-drone tasks. If vehicles had survived in storage, they could be reactivated for key-site defence or supplied to Ukraine as a temporary measure. Sending older equipment against newer opposing systems can also reveal how the two sides' development paths compare. Western equipment choices have generally held up better than Western production depth. The larger weaknesses exposed by the war are insufficient manufacturing volume and equipment shaped by long counter-insurgency campaigns rather than preparation for peer conflict. A revived Sergeant York would therefore be a useful stopgap and source of operational evidence rather than the obvious basis for a new mass-production programme.
