Secondary battleship roles lose value

Shore bombardment and task-group defence remained useful, but neither role necessarily justified a new battleship.

Notes

Battleships could still support amphibious operations and defend a carrier group. Heavy naval gunfire was valuable when a navy expected major landings, but that was not a constant requirement. Fighters and missiles also provided increasingly capable layers of fleet air defence around carriers. A navy therefore had to ask whether those secondary benefits were worth the cost of constructing a modernized big-gun ship.
