Seahawk capability and the alliance division of labor

Helicopter mine hunting illustrates a wider argument for sharing specialized capabilities across allied fleets.

Notes

Counting only dedicated minesweepers gives an incomplete picture of US mine-countermeasure capability. The MH-60S can search a wide area and address mines suited to helicopter-carried systems. Rare or especially difficult mines still call for allied vessels, specialist hulls, and their own off-board equipment. This division of labor reflects a NATO force structure that distributes specialized capabilities across allied fleets. The rough 75 to 80 percent solution describes that broader approach throughout the Seahawk's career; it does not quantify mine-clearance performance. Allies and other methods cover tasks outside the helicopter's capabilities.
