How feasible would a seagoing ironclad combining Virginia-style casemates with Monitor-style turrets be?
Short answerIt could be built on a larger hull, but the turrets would need to sit fore and aft and the design would require much better freeboard and stability than either original ship.
NotesA literal Virginia-plus-Monitor combination would be dangerously low and top-heavy in open water. A more credible version needs a larger seagoing hull with the broadside casemate retained. Placing turrets at the ends keeps their weight lower and prevents the central structure from blocking their arcs. Putting a turret on top of the casemate would raise the centre of gravity too far. The whole ship must therefore be redesigned around stability and seakeeping.
