The Fairey Seafox mattered far more in combat than its small size suggests. During the Battle of the River Plate, it scouted and helped concentrate Royal Navy fire, then overflew Montevideo to watch Admiral Graf Spee. This combined gunnery spotting, reconnaissance, and surveillance in a single cruiser-borne aircraft. The Seafox extended a cruiser's ability to find, assess, and engage an opponent.
