Aircraft development favoured Seafire over Sea Hurricane

The Royal Navy's carrier-fighter choice depended on immediate performance and which land-based aircraft family would continue receiving industrial development.

Notes

The Fleet Air Arm did receive Sea Hurricanes, but Hawker was moving its design effort toward the Typhoon and Tempest. Supermarine was still developing the Spitfire family from which Seafire emerged. The Spitfire was also the better performer overall, especially in climb rate. A carrier fighter tied to an airframe no longer being advanced would quickly become a technological dead end. The decision reflected the future of the supporting design line as well as the qualities of the aircraft already available.
