Sea lift must carry heavy equipment across the beach

The choice of an armoured-vehicle family is tied to Britain's expeditionary role and the need to land heavy equipment before a port is available.

Notes

Amphibious operations require a means of putting armour ashore, even though armour has changed from a soldier's personal protection to heavy vehicles. CV90 and Boxer are considered as ways to put several modern vehicle roles on a common hull. The preference for the US Marine Corps amphibious vehicle programme follows from a view of Britain as an expeditionary power, while choosing Boxer is treated as a strategic decision. Whatever vehicle is chosen, sea lift must get heavy equipment and tanks over a beach until a port has been captured or rebuilt.
