Sea Gladiators and CR.42s in their early-war context

Sea Gladiators are compared with Italian CR.42 biplanes to show why early-war carrier fighter performance must be judged against contemporary opponents, endurance, and reliability.

Notes

The Sea Gladiator's biplane layout did not make it useless at the start of the war. It often met Italian CR.42s, which were also biplanes, so contemporary opponents provide the useful comparison. The CR.42's endurance and reliability may explain why it appeared so often over water, where either quality mattered directly to pilot survival. Carrier aircraft need to be judged by date, mission, and opposition instead of appearance alone.
