The Sea Fury was the mature end of Hawker's piston-fighter lineage, entering service while naval jet technology was still unreliable and incompletely understood. It provided dependable combat capability as carriers, maintainers, and aircrew learned to operate the new aircraft. Building the best of the established generation alongside its successor avoided placing every defence requirement on a technology that might not yet work as promised. A proven older system can remain valuable during this transition, especially when national defence cannot safely depend on an immature replacement.
