Why air defense at sea differs from area defense ashore

Missiles attacking a warship generally converge on the defended force, while land-based air defenses must protect an area against threats crossing many different paths.

Notes

A weapon intended to strike a warship or task group must approach that maritime target. This gives the defender a different interception problem from a battery protecting a broad area ashore. An area-defense system on land may have to engage weapons flying across or away from its position. Difficult interceptions in a land war therefore do not establish how the same weapon would fare against a naval task group.
