Charybdis had already screened Indomitable in Operation Pedestal and proved valuable as an anti-aircraft ship. Her loss illustrates why employment had to follow real capability rather than the nominal label of cruiser. A coastal sweep against alerted torpedo craft demanded different strengths from escorting a carrier or convoy. Better dual-purpose armament could have made similar C- and D-class conversions even more valuable, provided commanders used them in roles that exploited their strengths.

Charybdis had proved valuable in anti-aircraft screening, but the Sept-Îles mission did not use her strengths well.
