Why an LHD can do more than a hospital ship

An LHD combines medical care with helicopters, landing craft, logistics, and command facilities in one adaptable ship.

Notes

Hospital ships can provide exceptional care and humanitarian visibility, but their unarmed status limits their deterrent and fisheries-protection roles. The answer argues that an LHD can offer a hospital facility while also carrying engineers, supplies, landing craft, helicopters, refugee accommodation, and command-and-control capacity. Retaining a ramp and the provisions for later F-35B operation would give a medium power still more options without requiring aircraft at the outset. That combination makes an amphibious ship more adaptable for disaster relief, though medical assistance can still be politically sensitive when delivered by an outside power.
