Scottish yards and Britain's domestic-build requirement

Domestic-build requirements make future British orders to Scottish yards dependent on their remaining within UK territory.

Notes

The procurement argument assumes that British warship orders must remain within UK territory. Earlier tanker construction in Korea is contrasted with an increasing emphasis on domestic construction. Scottish independence would therefore threaten the flow of future British warship orders to Scottish yards. Transferring work elsewhere would cause major disruption, potentially requiring programmes to stop and restart. Existing orders might be completed, but further work would then depend on other customers because a Scottish government would require fewer ships.
