Science fiction as a test bed for future naval problems

Fictional carriers offer a way to test roles, engineering constraints, and operational problems before comparable systems exist in the real world.

Notes

Science fiction offers more than a catalogue of imagined ships. Many technologies that are ordinary today would have appeared fictional to people in the past. Examining invented carriers can expose likely design and operational difficulties before navies face them directly. The exercise is useful when it identifies problems to prepare for without assuming that a fictional design will transfer unchanged into reality.
