Why school history compresses a larger story

A historiographical aside distinguishes necessary classroom compression from teaching false history.

Notes

School courses must fit large subjects into limited lesson time, a single academic year, and examination requirements. Teachers pare events and people down to a workable outline even when they know the fuller context. A good compressed account is not automatically false or bad history. It is an incomplete starting point whose complications can be recovered through deeper reading.
