B. B. Schofield on Arctic convoys and cold-water warfare

B. B. Schofield’s convoy books combine a participant’s view with later research on Arctic operations, sonar, ice, and escort warfare.

Notes

B. B. Schofield’s successive studies of Russian and Arctic convoys combine the author’s wartime experience with a substantial bibliography. The later book reflects more than a decade of additional research rather than simply repackaging the participant’s memories. The books also explain how ice and seasonal conditions altered ASDIC and sonar performance. Cold-water acoustics could extend detection at some times yet bend or reverberate sound misleadingly at others, complicating anti-submarine warfare.
