Schnellboot design: fast, fine, and torpedo-centred

The Schnellboot’s refined lines and diesel development made it a formidable torpedo attacker, but the same design choices constrained its gun platform and rough-water performance.

Notes

The design developed from early experimental boats through the diesel-powered S 6 and the improved S 7 type. Their 533 mm torpedoes were central to the design, while the narrow, high-speed hull favoured a run-in, launch, and withdrawal attack. Later conversions could exchange torpedo tubes for 20 mm or heavier anti-aircraft cannon when a gun fit was needed. Fine lines and speed worked well against coastal convoys, but made the boats less comfortable and less stable as gun platforms in the North Sea and Arctic.
