A cruiser on a distant station had to absorb damage, reach a safe harbor, and remain repairable where Germany had little naval infrastructure. Extra hull volume supported the eight-gun main battery, but it also made room for crew, food, spare parts, and other stores. Those reserves let Scharnhorst and Gneisenau operate as sustainable fighting units far from a home yard. The combination of armament, endurance, and resilience placed the class near the peak of armored-cruiser development. An opponent needed a comparable cruiser or a battlecruiser to meet them on favorable terms.
