A German-language book published in 1932 offers a contemporary outside view of the 1931-32 Sino-Japanese crisis. Its maps and German framing can be compared with British, American, and Japanese accounts rather than treated as a substitute for them. A second museum publication, on the period when Sweden's Charles XII governed from the Ottoman Empire, shows how institution-specific books preserve subjects that may be difficult to obtain elsewhere. Together the volumes demonstrate why museum shops and foreign-language sources can widen the national perspectives available to a naval historian.
