Why was the SBD Dauntless not designed with folding wings from the start?
Short answerFolding wings would have added risk and complexity to a small dive bomber with complex dive brakes; the benefit was clearer for larger torpedo bombers.
NotesFolding wings would be useful aboard a carrier, but adding the mechanism to a small dive bomber with complex dive brakes risked harming the SBD's defining capability. The Bureau of Aeronautics therefore faced a different tradeoff from that posed by larger torpedo bombers. For those larger aircraft, the space saved by folding wings more clearly justified the extra complexity.
