The Fritz X penetrated Savannah's third turret and three decks before exploding in a lower handling room. The blast opened the keel and killed roughly a fifth of the crew, making the reconstruction much more than routine battle-damage repair. Damage on that scale justified a prolonged proving period but did not permanently disqualify the hull. Had Japan not surrendered and the invasion gone ahead, operational need would probably have brought Savannah back into combat.

Savannah's Fritz X damage and return-to-war potential
Savannah's catastrophic guided-bomb damage explains both her long proving period and why she still could have returned for an invasion of Japan.
