Savage was ordered in 1941, when the Navy also needed to get repeat destroyers into service quickly. The plan of Scourge shows how much of a standard ship's forward layout Savage had to give up for the between-decks installation. Savage also tested two single 4.5-inch mountings aft. Operating both kinds of mounting on one ship imposed maintenance and supply costs while giving the Navy experience with each.

What Savage's gun installation displaced
Compare Savage with sister ship Scourge to see how much space a new main gun mounting could take away from the standard layout.
